Polio (Poliomyelitis) is a disease which affects the human digestive system (in some cases the nervous system) and is caused by a virus. It is a serious disease and both children and adults are strongly advised to be vaccinated against polio. One needs several injections of the vaccine to be fully protected against poliomyelitis. If you are not immunised , you can get polio if your water, food or hands are contaminated with the faeces (poo) an infected person with polio.

Symptoms and or features of Poliomyelitis include:
- consistant vomiting - fever/sore throat - headaches - back/neck pain or stiffness - fatigue - stiffness or pain in the legs or arms Prevention/treatment: Personal hygiene and sanitisation helps prevent the spread of polio, but the polio vaccine is most effective. Although the vaccine is effective, it can cause some nasty side efects which include: -dizziness/weakness -difficulty breathing/unusual paleness -hives/rapid heart rate/swelling of throat -wheezing/hoarseness If you or someone you know has these side effects, seek medical attention immediately. Antibiotics are available for people with polio, as are other medications to help reduce muscle spasms and pain-relieving medication is also available. Exercise can help, as can regular massaging and physiotherapy. |
